Apple has updated a support document on its website about the iPhone 12 magnets and MagSafe accessories to clarify that all iPhones, not just the latest models, may cause interference with medical devices like pacemakers and defibrillators.

The following passage of text was added to Apple’s support document:

Though all iPhone 12 models contain more magnets than prior iPhone models, they’re not expected to pose a greater risk of magnetic interference to medical devices than prior iPhone models.

To be clear, all iPhones contain magnets and components that emit electromagnetic fields.

Problematic magnets and radios

Because the latest iPhone 12 models feature MagSafe, they are outfitted with more magnets than any prior model. All MagSafe accessories also contain magnets while the MagSafe and MagSafe Duo chargers feature radios inside as well.

These magnets and electromagnetic fields might interfere with medical devices, Apple warns.

To avoid any potential interactions with these devices, keep your iPhone and MagSafe accessories a safe distance away from your device (more than 6 inches / 15 cm apart or more than 12 inches / 30 cm apart if wirelessly charging). But consult with your physician and your device manufacturer for specific guidelines.

Apple advises that you stop using your iPhone or MagSafe accessories if they are interfering with the medical device implanted in your body.
