Apple can now repair an iPhone 12 Pro’s broken rear glass without replacing the whole device

Back in February, it was reported that Apple was working on a way to replace the glass back panel in the iPhone 12 without requiring the replacement of the full device, too. The repair unit was made available for two iPhone 12 models, and now availability has expanded.

MacRumors is reporting today that Apple is longer requiring a full device replacement when replacing a broken glass back panel for the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. The new repair unit is called the “iPhone Rear System” part, which has been delivered to both Apple Authorized Service Providers and Apple Stores. This new part includes the rear enclosure of the iPhone 12 unit, which includes all of the necessary components with the exception of the display and rear camera systems.

The new part includes the battery, the wireless charging coil, the Taptic Engine, Face ID system, logic board, and more.

According to the report, the part is now available for the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Which lines up with the report from earlier this year, where Apple introduced the same part for repairs with the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12.

From the report:

If a customer has an iPhone 12 Pro with cracked rear glass, for example, an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider is able to replace the entire rear portion of the device with the iPhone Rear System part, while retaining the customer’s original display and rear camera. For this reason, the iPhone’s display and rear camera must be free of damage or issues in order for the device to qualify for a same-unit repair.

MR says that devices should be eligible for this repair if the device can’t be powered on, or if the device is experiencing issues with the Face ID system, the logic board, or the enclosure itself. That obviously includes a cracked rear glass panel.

It’s good that Apple was able to expand availability of this repair option to the other iPhone 12 models.
