Leaked images claim to show a new iPhone 12 Lightning cable with a braided fabric design

This year’s upcoming iPhone 12 models are widely expected to stick with Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector and now a leaker has posted a fresh batch of previously unseen photographs of the new cable showing off its braided fabric design,

Serial leaker “Mr White“ today shared new photos of a claimed Lightning cable that’s supposed to be included in the ‌iPhone 12‌ box. Assuming the leaked photographs are genuine )we cannot vouch for their legitimacy), you still have the Lightning connector at one end and a switch away from the USB-A connector to a USB-C one at the other.

Its braided design may solve one of the most common complaints about Apple’s cables: fragility and durability (they’re especially prone to fraying at the edges).

MacRumors commented:

Previously leaked USB-C to Lightning cables have featured eight silver contacts with rhodium-plated ruthenium, which is more resistant to corrosion, and that also appears to be the case in these photos. Combined with the braided design, the cables are likely to be able to better withstand damage after prolonged use.

Apple has never offered a cable with a braided design for its iPhones or iPads, but it does offer a braided Thunderbolt Pro cable, a black braided USB-C to Lightning cable that ships with the Mac Pro and a braided power cable for the HomePod.

Another Twitter leaker who goes by the handle “@L0vetodream“ in July shared the first image of the Lightning-to-USB-C cable with a braided design.

How to fast-charge your iPhone

The switch to a more durable Lightning-to-USB-C cable means you’ll be able to use the fast-charge feature without investing in additional cables, provided you also have an 18-watt USB-C charger like the one that came with your iPad Pro or iPhone 11 Pro.

Because iPhones lack USB-C, fast-charge functionality requires Apple’s USB-C to Lightning cable (or a third-party one). As we said before, you also need at least an 18-watt Apple USB-C power adapter or stronger (or a comparable third-party USB-C power adapter) that supports the USB Power Delivery protocol (USB-PD).

Featured wireless chargers for your iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods

The following Apple devices support the fast-charge feature:

  • iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and later
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st generation and later)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later)
  • iPad Pro 10.5-inch
  • iPad Air (3rd generation)
  • iPad mini (5th generation)

On a compatible iPhone, the fast-charge feature lets you recharge your device from dead to up to 50 percent battery in around 30 minutes. Even faster fast-charge implementations can be found on flagship Android devices, but Apple has adopted a more cautious approach when it comes to recharging your iPhone.
