A leaker claims that the flagship iPhone 12 Pro models — the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max — will come outfitted with six gigabytes of RAM while a pair of non-Pro models will apparently remain stuck with four gigabytes of RAM like the current iPhone 11 family.

More RAM for higher-end iPhones

That’s according to serial leaker @L0vetodream, who noted on Twitter that only the higher-end Pro models of the next iPhone will feature six gigabytes of RAM.

• iPhone 12 (5.4 inches): 4GB RAM
• iPhone 12 Plus (6.1 inches): 4GB RAM
• iPhone 12 Pro (6.1 inches): 6GB RAM
• iPhone 12 Pro Max (6.7 inches): 6GB RAM

The claim corroborates previous rumors concerning the internal specifications of the upcoming iPhone 12 lineup. Last November, Barclays analysts predicted that the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will feature 6GB of RAM while the two base models should come equipped with the same 4GB of RAM as the current iPhone 11 family.

For what it’s worth, L0vetodream is a pretty reliable leaker who previously correctly predicted Apple’s 2020 iPad Pro refresh with Magic Keyboard, the new iPhone SE, the major user interface overhaul in macOS Big Sur and more.

Why more RAM?

Boosting the RAM may have something to do with these models having three rear cameras along with the rumored LiDAR scanner that would require additional RAM for processing (the current iPhone 11 models don’t have LiDAR so they can get away with 4GB of RAM).

It’s also entirely possible that these models could even boost their screen resolution, especially with the flagship model going from 6.5 to 6.7 inches. As a result of having a higher-resolution display, these phones would require more RAM for the frame buffer.

The iPhone 12 will be powered by the next-generation Apple A14 system-on-a-chip said to be fabbed on TSMC’s 5-nanometer process, resulting in a faster and more battery efficient chip.
